Cancer Research Experience for Undergraduates (CREU)
Overview
The Cancer Research Experience for Undergraduates (CREU) program is a 10-week summer program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus for undergraduate students who are interested in careers in biomedical research. Students spend time in a laboratory working with a mentor from the University of Colorado Cancer Center, attend workshops, conduct a research project, and present a research poster at the end of the summer program. Students are recruited from both in-state and out-of-state universities.
Evaluation Approach
Evaluators administer end-of-program surveys with students and mentors. Surveys are designed to get feedback on students’ research projects, overall laboratory experience, and quality of mentorship.
Evaluators also will track long-term outcomes for students by sending surveys two- and five-years following student participation in the program. Measures to be collected consist of pursuing higher degrees in biomedical sciences or medicine, research productivity, and professional careers in cancer and biomedical research.
